Hands measuring a navy hoodie laid flat across the chest from armpit to armpit.

How to Measure a Hoodie You Already Own

Lay a hoodie you like flat and measure it across the chest, down the body, and along the sleeve. Compare those numbers with the garment measurements on the size chart for the hoodie you’re buying.

Measure your hoodie flat

  1. Chest width: Smooth out the fabric without stretching it. Measure straight across from armpit to armpit.
  2. Body length: Measure from the high point of the shoulder near the neckline to the bottom hem. Use a different starting point if the product’s chart specifies one.
  3. Sleeve length: Follow the chart’s diagram. Some brands start at the shoulder seam, while others start at the center back of the neck.

Compare like with like

If your favorite hoodie measures 25 inches across the chest and the chart lists a flat width of 24 inches, the new hoodie is about an inch narrower when laid flat. If the chart lists body chest circumference, use your body measurement and the chart’s sizing instructions instead.

Check the fit you want

If you have broad shoulders or usually wear a layer underneath, measure a hoodie that already gives you enough room when you reach forward. Check shoulder width if the chart provides it, along with chest width, sleeve length, and body length.
